Tarsonis

From the Encyclopedia of Speculative Fiction - http://encyclopedia.wizards.pro

Tarsonis was the capital of the Terran Confederacy.

A temperate planet with a core continent, Tarsonis was colonized by Terran prisoners who landed in the vessel, the Nagglfar. This supercarrier vessel had on board the ATLAS, an artificial intelligence which also recorded information on Terran technology and mutations. This technological information gave the Tarsonians an edge over the two nearby colonies, Moria and Umoja, and resulted in the Terran Confederacy being the most powerful of the three factions. It was the most advanced of the three original Terran colonies and headquarters of the Terran Confederacy, and at the beginning of StarCraft Episode I was still the intellectual and political center of the sector.

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

It was the base of operations of the Terran Confederacy When the Sons of Korhal struck at Tarsonis at the end of Episode I of StarCraft, they assaulted one of three orbiting defense platforms to allow for a strike team to infiltrate the planet. Unbeknownst to Raynor or Kerrigan, this strike team had been sent by Arcturus Mengsk to set up Psi Emitters to attract the Zerg to the Confederate capital world. As such, the planet was devastated by the Zerg. Shortly after the Zerg abandoned the planet. Since then, it has been barren and empty, with only a few Zerg, though Infested Kerrigan briefly used it as her headquarters.

The Zerg still visit the planet occasionally, but it is mostly empty.
