Seamus Finnigan is a student at Hogwarts. He is in Harry Potter's year and is also sorted into Gryffindor House. Presented as generally good-natured and easy-going, Seamus is the son of a muggle father and a witch mother. Seamus' Irish background is suggested by his name, his manner of speech and his support for the Irish team in the Quidditch World Cup in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. His attendance at Hogwarts indicates that there may not be a separate school of witchcraft and wizardry in Ireland, but that Irish wizards and witches attend Hogwarts.

Of all the boys in Harry's year and house, Seamus is the least enthusiastic supporter of Harry Potter, often demonstrating skepticism of Harry's claims. He does, however, join Dumbledore's Army in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and after the death of Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Seamus insists on remaining at Hogwarts in order to attend the funeral for the fallen headmaster despite his mother's wish to remove him immediately from the perceived dangers at the school.

Seamus seems to represent the average Hogwarts student. Harry must always work to avoid alienating people such as Seamus Finnegan, as active support from characters such as this may well be critical to the defeat of Voldemort.
