Dean Thomas is a student at Hogwarts. He is in Harry Potter's year and was sorted into Gryffindor House along with Harry and several of the other principal characters.

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

The son of Muggles, Dean becomes very good friends with Seamus Finnigan. From the books themselves very little is revealed about Dean Thomas, other than that he is a supporter of the West Ham football team and he is good at drawing. However, Dean Thomas is one character that J.K. Rowling has not been able to develop as fully in the books as she has in her imagination. In her own website, the author reveals more about Dean's background, including the fact that he is being raised by his mother and his stepfather, his own natural father (who may have been a wizard?) having been killed by Lord Voldemort or his supporters. Dean Thomas is one of the first to arrive for the inaugural meeting of the group that became Dumbledore's Army in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and his support for his friend does not appear to falter.

Toward the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and through the first part of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Dean is linked romantically with Ginny Weasley. Harry may have contributed to their split while under the influence of the good luck Felix Felicis potion, which caused Harry (who had developed an interest in Ginny himself) to bump into Ginny while under the invisibility cloak. Fortunately for Harry, Ginny blamed Dean and the resulting squabble proved fatal to their relationship.
